Tags used during dirtbike races

If the tag was able to be read from 2-3 feet away you could assign a tag to a certain race bike so when the rider comes through it records what place he is in and split time to the reader. There are systems out there but if it could be attached to a phone or palm pilot that a person could hold at the start/finish line that would make everything easy without the expensive loss of a transmitter.
